NEXT COOK THE BOOKS…BOOK!

Hello everyone!
It is finally my turn (oh yeah, I am Jo from Food Junkie not Junk Food) to be the host of the next Cook the Books and I have something for the boys this time. I don’t know if you realized (I certainly did): we haven’t had any male participation so far, which is a real shame, because I know there are readers-bloggers-cooks out there, that would have liked to cook our books, but admittedly the books were a bit…girly!

Moreover, I wanted a book translated into Greek also, so perhaps some of my Greek readeres will be able to participate (not that I hold my hopes very high…).

The next pick therefor for Cook the Books Club (and one of my favourite books) will be: Anthony Bourdain’s, Kitchen Confidential, Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, a ” deliciously funny, delectably shocking banquet of wild-but-true tales of life in the culinary trade from Chef Anthony Bourdain, laying out his more than a quarter-century of drugs, sex, and haute cuisine”.

What more do you want?

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS:  25th of April 2009

P.S.  Anthony Bourdain is the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in New York, and he is the host of the series No Reservations on the Travel Channel. He is the author of A Cook’s Tour, Les Halles Cookbook, and the novels Bone in the Throat and Gone Bamboo.

Cool book pick! I read this several years ago and look forward to becoming immersed in it again, this time with an eye toward cooking up something high octane like the author!

Great choice Johanna–a fun book to revisit!

For those of you asking about “joining”, there is no formal process. Just read the book, cook your dish and post it by April 25th and let us know when you do it (So we know to include you!). In between times, feel free to post your thoughts and comments on the book on this site. We look forward to having you!

i’m almost finished reading the book, but as a truly seasonal cook, i know i am going to have trouble trying to cook something from it, with the compunded problem that it focesses a lot on meat, french food, and cooking styles that i have not heard of before i read the book. bourdain is a very good story-teller, which has kept me reading to the end, but the food i am reading about is a planet away from my usual approach to food and cooking.
the book itself is interesting and thought-provoking, but the characters portrayed in it are degenarates, kind of like junk food addicts; they never seem to be eating real food themselves, despite the fact that a lot of real food is being cooked by them for the pleasure of others.
this does not mean that i found the book uninspiring, but it is certainly different from what i expected for inspiration in the kitchen!

I read this book several years ago and loved it. Now I need to try to think up a dish inspired by it. hmmmm.

I picked up Kitchen Confidential yesterday and finished reading 90 Minutes in Heaven a few hours later, so was ready for my next read. I wasn’t too sure I was going to enjoy it and mentioned that to my SO. Well, it took the foreward to assure me that I was most definitely going to enjoy it. Having worked my way through college waiting tables and tending bar, I immediately connected with a few of Bourdain’s anecdotes. I really don’t know much about him except where he cooks. I’ll have to see if I can catch his TV show, but I know this is one bad boy I’m going to like.

I am loving this book! I think I have decided on my dish to cook too. I haven’t seen a lot of Anthony Bourdain on TV – just a couple of shows – but I can so clearly hear his voice through this. And I happen to think he has a really sexy speaking voice.

Wait – he’s not going to read these, is he?

I read it cover to cover and didn’t really get inspired to cook any one thing… It did inspire me to eat sushi however!! Does that count? *giggle*
